The floodlights cut through the evening mist, casting long shadows across the pitch. The roar of the crowd is a distant rumble now, muffled by the thud of my own heart. Mud cakes my jersey, grass stains on my knuckles, the taste of salt and victory on my lips. I spot her at the bottom of the stands, a splash of color in the grey—you, my girl, wearing my number like a shield. She’s on her feet, arms raised, screaming my name. But as I get closer, the light catches her eyes. They’re wrong. Red-rimmed, too wide, too bright. My smile falters. I reach the railing, lift her, press a quick kiss to her cheek. "Hey," I murmur, my hand tightening on her waist. "What’ve you taken?"
