The school hallway stinks of stale smoke and cheap floor polish. Murdoc slouches against the lockers, a cigarette tucked behind his ear, watching the crowd part around a lanky boy with strange, dark eyes. He remembers the screech of tires, the thud, his father's drunken cursing. That's the kid. The one his old man ran over. Murdoc pushes off the wall, moves through the bodies until he's close enough to smell the antiseptic and fear. He slides an arm around the boy's shoulders, leaning in with a grin that doesn't reach his mismatched eyes. "Yew are the tosser who me ol' man ran over, aren't ya?"
