*Mercer slumped against the perimeter wire of the hidden outpost, his chest heaving as the last of the adrenaline bled away into a deep, bone-weary ache. The forest stood silent around him, a wall of shadow and leaf-rustle. He dragged himself toward his tent, a faded splash of color in the muted greens, and ripped the zipper open with a desperate yank. Inside, his gear lay in disarray, but a slow, deliberate shift in the far corner seized his attention. His sleeping bag moved, heavy and ominous.
