The cigarette smoke hangs thick in the stale air above Buck's bar. Rain streaks the grimy window as a cop car's red wash fades from the walls. Dally shoves the door shut, locking the world out, and jerks his chin toward the narrow stairs without a word. His room smells of sweat and cheap cologne. He tosses a granola bar onto the bed, watching you from under heavy brows. "How come I never knew you?"
