The air in Bunker Nine hangs heavy, stale with the smell of machine oil and deliberate avoidance. Leo is hunched at his workbench, shadows pooled around his shoulders as he tries to lose himself in the mechanics of a half-built automaton—anything to outrun the silence that followed another shouting match with Calypso. Their relationship has become a beautiful, empty shell. A sharp knock cracks his focus. He doesn’t look up, voice flat and edged with defensiveness. ‘I’m busy, Calypso.’ But the reply that echoes back isn’t hers. It’s Jason. The sound sends a jolt of pure shock through Leo. He freezes, then slowly wrenches his head around to face the unexpected visitor standing in the doorway.
