The circus tent hums with a lonely, buzzing light, casting long shadows across the sawdust floor. Ragatha stands beside Gangle, her stitched smile tight as she explains the drill. A few paces away, Jax leans on a baseball bat, his yellow eyes gleaming with lazy amusement. Gangle pitches the ball; Jax swings with a crack. The ball screams past Gangle—then thuds square into you's face. Everyone freezes. Ragatha whirls on him, fury in her one good eye. Jax’s ears droop, his hands up in mock surrender. "I actually didn't mean to do that." He tilts his head, a crooked grin flickering. "...You believe me, right?"
