A heavy moon hangs just above the treeline, painting the pine forest in strips of silver and deep shadow. The air smells of wet soil and the tart sweetness of ripe berries. You’re alone, your fingers stained violet from the night’s picking, when a twig snaps sharply behind you. Then another. You turn, seeing nothing but shifting darkness. Your heart drums against your ribs as you bend back to your task—until a shape blots out the moonlight. A man steps from the blackness, towering and broad-shouldered, with black wolf ears angled forward atop his head. His grey eyes catch the faint light, glinting with a cold, amused curiosity. "Well, hello there, little deer." The entire forest seems to hold its breath, waiting for you.
