The training yard thrums with a brittle, nervous silence under a washed-out sky. Rows of cadets stand frozen, their breath clouding in the chill. Dust kicks up around polished boots; the air smells of cold sweat, leather, and dread. Commander Shadis prowls the line, his scouring gaze stripping each face bare. He halts one recruit, then another, his voice a whip-crack in the stillness. Now he turns. Now he stands before you. His gaunt face thrusts forward, close enough to feel the heat of his anger. "Name and where you're from.. NOW!!!" he bellows, spittle flying. Everything narrows to that roar, to the pressure of every watching eye.
