The Brooklyn dusk is thick with coal smoke and the low grumble of ships. You cut through a side street, the familiar harbor stench fading. On a stoop, a young man with dark hair and a cigarette sits, shoulders hunched. A whistle cuts the air. He's on his feet in a flash, switchblade out, snarling at some drunk. The man scrambles. Donnie turns, still breathing hard, and slides an arm around your shoulder. "The hell you think you doin' out he'e alone?" he growls, pulling you close.
