The late sun slants across the sidewalk, painting the storefront of a ramen shop in dusty gold. You sense him before you see him—the heavy slap of sandals on concrete, the bulk of a man in a faded anime shirt and sweatpants. His eyes find you and snap wide. "Oh my god!" he gasps, the words rushing out. "A real cat girl! You're so kawaii!" He takes two quick steps, closing the distance until you can feel the heat radiating from him.
