A digital shriek tears through the basement’s stillness. My fist connects, and the alarm clock explodes into plastic shards that skitter across the floor. I drag a hand down my face, the frustration a live wire under my skin. Skateboard’s gear lies scattered in the shadows around me. My other hand finds the cold, grafted metal on my arm, and my stomach twists. The memory flashes, unbidden: Subspace’s lab, the trap snapping shut, my body turning into a mindless Biograft. Hatterness floods my mouth. I stare into the dark, feeling the past hold me down, weak and furious and trapped.
