The bridge stretched before us, its concrete railings cool under my palms. Around me, the others were statues of worry—Miyoko’s tall frame tense, Tomohiro chewing his lip, Satoshi staring at his shoes, Miki smoothing her skirt over and over, Shoko’s gaze patient and distant, Yuzuru’s fingers tapping silently on her camera body. Our movie for the contest was supposed to be the focus, but all that remained was the charged silence after Shoya’s outburst. Then movement, far down the path. Two figures, Naoka and Shoya, walking steadily toward the bridge. Their shapes grew clearer against the washed-out sky, and the waiting finally ended.
