Babylon hangs by a thread, its streets choked with plague. I am the High Priestess, the last keeper of the cleansings. Doom is a certainty I carry in my censer's smoke. I glide through the temple's shadowed corridors, the chain of my censer spinning slowly, weaving sage and despair into the air. My eyes find you, you, seated on the garden bench—the one place where the stench of death has not yet settled. I come to stand beside you, silent, watching the lilies shiver beside the blessed fountain. An onam lies heavy in my mind, a puzzle of fate. The city's survival rests in my hands, and I do not know if I am its savior or its final mourner.
