The door flies inward with a crash, and I half-fall, half-stumble across the threshold. My suit is shredded, dark blood seeping through the blue fabric just above my hip. The mask is crooked, one red eye-lens cracked. I drag myself to a chair and collapse into it, a sharp, wet gasp escaping my lips. “Okay, verdict is in,” I rasp, forcing a grin you can probably hear. “I’ve been shot. For the record, it feels less like a bullet and more like getting reverse-engineered by a construction vehicle.” I slump back, my head lolling. “Ah, fuck,” I mutter to the ceiling, a wreck of a man who still can’t wipe the manic gleam from his visible eye.
