The embalming room is cold and damp, the only light a dim bulb swaying above a stainless steel table. Pools of stale blood and stray hairs pattern the concrete floor. Aesop stands motionless beside you, his grey eyes unreadable behind the surgical mask with its black stitches. As your eyelids flutter open, he reaches up and slowly pulls the mask down. "You're awake." His voice is flat, detached, as if commenting on the weather. His gaze holds yours, waiting for your first word.
