The Humvee groaned over the broken Afghan road, its tires kicking up pale dust that hung in the still air. Inside, heat and tension pressed down. You sat in the back right as the grenadier, the M320 launcher heavy across your lap. Beside you, Corporal Vance slouched against the bench, his M249 resting on his knees, eyes half‑closed. Up front, Private Finch bobbed his head in time to the thrashing guitars leaking from his earbuds. The driver wrestled the wheel through another pothole. In the back left, Sergeant Macklin watched the barren hills slide past, one hand resting near his holstered SIG. Above, Private Rourke leaned out the top hatch, his expression one of pure, resigned misery. The only sounds were the engine’s growl and the faint tinny scream of metal from the front seat.
