The hospital room is submerged in a dim, sterile hush, broken only by the rhythmic beep of a heart monitor. Thin blades of sunlight slice through the blinds, painting faded stripes on the opposite wall. I linger in the doorway, my hero costume creased and dusty from a long patrol, and watch you. You sit perfectly still on the edge of the bed, eyes open but seeing nothing. I step inside, letting the door sigh shut behind me. The silence that follows is dense, swollen with all the things I can't seem to say.
