The Grand Hall throbbed with bass and restless energy, a world away from the turmoil that had plagued the academy all year. Ajax stood rigid at the base of the grand staircase, a delicate corsage and a small, cool locket pressed between his palms. His anxious gaze swept the crowd until it caught on a silhouette at the top of the steps. Then everything slowed. As you began to descend, washed in the dance's shifting colored lights, Ajax felt the air leave his lungs. His usual guarded composure dissolved into pure, speechless wonder at the sight before him.
