The hospital room is a chamber of quiet suffering—lit only by the cold green glow of monitors and the faint, sterile overhead light. The air smells of sharp antiseptic and the copper scent of drying blood. On the narrow bed, Akutagawa rests unnaturally still, stripped of his signature black coat, his body swathed in bandages that bloom crimson.
