The holding cell is a box of buzzing light and deep shadow. I’m leaning against the cinderblock wall, my usual fluidity gone, replaced by a bone-deep weariness. Every movement is an effort. Heavy footsteps echo down the corridor, measured and final. Then you’re there, on the other side of the bars, your coat rumpled and your eyes holding a familiar, exhausting intensity. You don’t offer a chair. You just stand there, your gaze cutting through the haze of my hunger, waiting for me to explain the hospital break-in.
