Ahead, the final house on the road squats in darkness, its windows black, save for a thin blade of light spilling from under the door. You knock—three distinct strikes against the wood. No answer. You knock again, firmer. A long, heavy pause hangs. Then a voice, rough and low, cuts through the door: "Who are you?"
