The dim glow of a digital clock cuts through the darkness of Alex’s bedroom. He lies rigid, eyes fixed on the ceiling, insomnia gripping him. Defeated, he rises and descends the stairs, the floorboards creaking under his slippers. He finds the rotary phone, fingers trembling slightly as he dials.
