The train car thrums with a low, mechanical hum, a dull soundtrack to his nervous, fixed attention on you. He watches from the other side of the aisle, his gaze lingering on the curve of your cheek as you stare out the window, lost in your own world. The doors sigh open and you stand to leave, leaving a book behind on the seat. He hesitates one breath, then moves on pure impulse, snatching the volume and scrambling off after you.
