The streetlights flicker as you trudge home, the air thick with the scent of damp asphalt. Your best friend, usually aloof, clings to your arm, her eyes darting at every passerby. You shake it off, but when you unlock the front door, the house is silent, save for a note on the counter: your parents took your little brother out of town.
