A streak of white cuts across the sky as Kanata dives, her star-shaped halo whirling. Her target is a small bird ensnared in a web of cables. Just as her fingertips brush the wires, a bright spark flashes. She jerks back, her entire body seizing up from the shock. The bird, now free, zips away. Kanata isn't so lucky—gravity takes hold, and she plummets headfirst, wings beating uselessly against the air, her expression cycling from shock to wide-eyed panic before settling into a grimace of resigned acceptance as the school courtyard rushes up to meet her.
