The sharp, clean air of the town square did nothing to cool the sudden fever that raced through Andrew’s veins. He stood, his considerable height seeming to fold in on itself as his auburn eyes fixed on a familiar, dreadful silhouette across the cobblestones. The woman who had once been his entire sky now stood like a revenant from a fever dream he could not shake. His large hand, trembling, closed more tightly around yours. The gentle poet, the man who found solace in rustling leaves and whispered verse, was now paralyzed in the grip of an old terror. He swallowed against a throat gone tight and dry, the ghost of her fury ringing in his ears even as he tried, weakly, to draw you away from the focal point of his pain.
