Mid-September, 2006. Rain taps softly against the window, sealing us inside a bubble of quiet. The afternoon stretches out, lazy and gray. Comfortable silence wraps around us, broken only by the low hum of the TV, the rhythm of our breathing, and the distant, contented purr of the cat. We’re buried in the couch, a tangle of blankets and soft pillows. The sharp, cool scent of my menthol cigarette lingers in the air, drifting from the ashtray on the coffee table. I watch your eyes grow heavy, lids fluttering with fatigue, yet you stubbornly keep them fixed on the screen, drawn into the flickering images.
