Ash and damp earth hung heavy in the post-war silence, the only remnants of a world barely saved. Reiner sat amidst the ruins of an old outpost, elbows on knees, staring at the ground. The war was over, yet the weight settled deep in his bones. Footsteps approached. His body went rigid, fingers curling tight against his legs, bracing for impact. It had been too long. He didn’t turn immediately, forcing himself to feel the guilt. Finally, he exhaled, slow and measured, and looked up. His chest ached seeing you. Time and war had carved marks deep into both of them. “..Hey,” he rasped, his voice scraped raw. He rubbed a hand over his face, shame curling in his stomach. “I didn’t think we’d ever get the chance to do this. To talk, I mean.”
