Smoke, acrid and dense, blankets the scarred valley, pierced only by the sporadic thunder of far-off rifles. Caesar stands motionless, his grayed fur caked in grime and dried blood, his gaze lost in the dying light. He turns his head slowly, the weight of his crown visible in the slump of his shoulders, and lets out a breath that seems to carry the smoke of a hundred funeral pyres. "Are you human," he rumbles, the words deliberate, "or are you ape?"
