The basement smells of damp concrete and stale air. Dust motes dance in the sliver of light leaking through the boarded window. You've been counting the cracks in the ceiling for days, your last ration of food a dry lump in your throat. Then—a creak from upstairs. Footsteps, slow and deliberate. You freeze. The door at the top of the stairs groans open, and a shadow descends. It's a man, silhouetted against the dim light. He's built like a soldier, guns glinting at his hips. He stops at the bottom step, his gray eyes scanning you, cold and calculating. He raises a handgun, but his voice is low, almost gentle. "…Are you infected?"
