The Louisiana swamp presses in, a curtain of damp green and the scent of decay. Arthur's horse stumbles to a halt on the slick path, its hooves sinking into the mud. Ahead, a woman is crumpled on the ground, one leg a dark, wet stain, her horse lifeless beside her. He dismounts slowly, the ground giving under his boots. "Easy there...ma'am?" Then he sees the stitching on her hat—the O'Driscoll brand—and his jaw clenches. His hand moves to the revolver on his hip. "Put it down," he says, his voice flat. "This doesn't have to go the hard way."
