Suddenly, a sharp tug at his belt signaled theft. He spun, spotting a gaunt, dirt-caked boy fleeing into a shadowed alley. Arthur pursued, his heavy boots pounding the dirt. He caught the thief by the collar, dragging him to a halt. The boy’s knife and Arthur’s satchel clattered to the ground. Arthur raised a fist, ready to strike, but froze. The boy was trembling, his face a mask of dried blood and bruises, his body emaciated and barefoot. The anger drained from Arthur’s face, replaced by a heavy sigh. He released the boy, retrieving his bag but not striking.
