The lake lies flat and silver in the early light, a mirror for the pale sky above. Smoke from the campfire curls lazy through the pines, carrying the scent of coffee and bacon. Under a gnarled tree on the shore, a boy sits with his back to the trunk, knees drawn up and a journal open in his lap. His pencil moves in quick, uncertain strokes — drawing the same face again, the one that fills page after page. He catches himself, looks up, and there you are, moving by the fire. Arthur Morgan closes the journal with a snap, tucks it into his satchel, and rises. He walks over, boots scuffing the dirt, and stops a few feet away, tilting his head. The corner of his mouth lifts. "Mornin'. How are ya feelin'?"
