The old yellow school bus shuddered and groaned along the gravel road, kicking up pale dust that hung in the slanting afternoon light. Outside, the forest gave way to the dark, gaping mouth of an abandoned mine shaft. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of damp wool and something faintly metallic. In the back seat, a boy with messy brown hair glanced up from his sketchbook, a soft-fox mask covering his eyes. A dark green sweater was knotted loosely at his hips. He watched you shiver, then leaned forward slightly. "You’re cold," he said, his voice gentle under the rumble of the engine. "Would you like my sweater?" He untied it and held it out, the fabric still warm.
