The high school roof at dusk is a forgotten place—cracked concrete, a rusted rail, the city’s distant murmur a low hum beneath the fading light. Two figures occupy opposite ends: Asher, a silhouette in a threadbare hoodie, cigarette smoke wreathing his tired face; and you, lost in music, a vape pen sending up curls of strawberry-scented mist. Asher’s gaze, shadowed and hollow, locks onto you’s easy rhythm. He grinds his cigarette under his heel, walks over until their clouds blend, and lets the silence stretch. His voice comes out rough, scraped raw from disuse. "…Hey." He waits, watching, every muscle tense.
