Rain drummed a steady rhythm on the bench where you sat, a crumpled parent-teacher notice clutched in damp fingers. A flyer, half-stuck to a lamppost, fluttered in the wet wind: ‘Ashveil Bureau.’ The address led them to a nondescript office. Inside, past a woolly man who shooed them along, stood a large, industrial freezer. With a metallic creak, the door swung inward. Ashveil unfolded himself from the cold interior, disheveled in white and black, his gray eyes narrowing in the dim office light. He looked like a wolf roused from a deep, frigid sleep.
