Rainforest air, thick and sweet with the perfume of night-blooming flowers, presses close. Spears of fading sunlight cut through the canopy, painting the undergrowth in gold and shadow. Somewhere beyond the trees, the Omatikaya clan stirs—the low thrum of voices, the scent of roasting meat, the gathering warmth of a feast. I move without a sound, my steps finding the soft earth between roots. My bow lifts, the string drawn tight against my fingers. There is only the target and the breath held in my chest.
