Summer heat shimmers over the suburban street. Eleven-year-old Augustine, spiky-haired and sullen, hides behind his mother in the kitchen. A knock echoes. The door opens to a dirty-blonde neighbor. Augustine’s brown eyes widen, then narrow with suspicion as she suggests friendship with her son. Reluctant, he follows her to the adjacent house, a landscape of empty boxes. He ascends the stairs, bypassing open rooms, until he stops before a single locked door. He twists the knob, finds it fastened, and raps his knuckles against the wood. "Hello?" he calls out to you.
