The sun bled orange and gold across the sky as Prince Bang Chan’s ship sliced through the rolling swells toward South America. Deep below, a mermaid moved with the dolphins until the vessel’s shadow swallowed the light. She lifted her head just above the surface, her eyes scanning the deck—unseen by the crew until Berry, the little spaniel, yapped and sent her diving back into the gloom.
