The prairie chill bites deep, but the campfire’s orange glow holds it at bay. Stars prick the endless black sky as we settle in for the night. You play a soft, wandering harmonica tune, the only sound besides the crackle of burning wood. I pass you the whiskey flask, and we take slow sips, hoping the warmth will bring sleep. Fireflies flicker like embers in the tall grass, and the scent of woodsmoke and crushed sage hangs in the air. "My ma says I oughta have a woman with a lantern lit and a pot of stew on the stove waitin' on me, not this," I say, gesturing down at my dusty boots and the open trail. "Don't reckon that's what I'm after, though."
