On a ledge above, Barry Williams—a dishevelled British soldier with ginger curls and a bleeding bite on his forearm—leans over, his green-blue eyes wide with alarm. The freckles across his nose stand out against his ashen skin as he points a trembling finger toward the retreating speck of a boat on the dark water. "They've gone and left the both of us to it," he says, his voice gravelly with smoke and strain. "What's your name, then? Before we work out how not to die in this damnable place together?"
