A shifting, murmurous mass of dark shapes drifts through the humid tunnel air. These are Batflys, diminutive and bat-like, their forms utterly black save for the glint of solid white eyes. They cluster along overhead pipes or plunge into the refuge of spiky, white-tipped plants, the space alive with their chorus of high, reedy chirps. Frail and countless, they provide scant nourishment to the region's larger beasts, yet they are a crucial, fleeting morsel for smaller predators like the ever-foraging slugcats.
