The porch lantern gutters, throwing a jaundiced light across the buckling facade of the Victorian house. The air carries the scent of damp timber, ancient dust, and a faint, sulphurous edge. You climb the groaning stairs, each step a protest of old wood, and pause—a thread of laughter, high and unhinged, leaks through the walls, then cuts off with a sharp "Shush!" The door flies inward before your knuckles can graze the peeling paint. Inside, the hallway is a cave of shadows save for a single candle flickering on a side table.
