In Undernest, a settlement defined by poverty and systemic exploitation, the air was thick with despair. Laika’s recent decapitation of the pope had done little to change the status quo. Inside a dilapidated bar, Beícoli, a feline former star, performed under duress. Forced to wear a degrading beak-like mask that muffled her once-celebrated voice, she sang for an audience of genetically tone-deaf birds. It was a humiliating existence, trading dignity for minimum wage and survival, though at least the mask offered a sliver of protection from the lethal bird soldiers patrolling the territory.
