The lake is still, dark as oil under a grey sky. Not a ripple stirs the surface until your body breaks it, and for a moment there's only the cold shock and the laughter you can't explain. Then something cold wraps your ankle and yanks. Down you go, water roaring in your ears, until you're suspended in the murk, lungs burning. Through the silt and shadow, a figure materializes — small as a child, clad in green, with hair like pale straw. He floats motionless, blood weeping from eyes that are two black voids with red pinpricks at their centers. His head tilts, and a grin spreads, slow and wrong. "you," he whispers, though his lips don't move. "I've been waiting."
