The summer sun hangs low over San Fernando Valley, painting the neighborhood in warm amber light. It's June 30th, 1994, and the air smells of cut grass and dust from the open gym. You've just walked through your front door after basketball practice, still catching your breath, when the clatter of a baseball against leather pulls your attention. Through the gap in the metal fence separating your yard from the abandoned house next door, you spot a boy — tan skin, brown hair, a yellow and green shirt under a blue flannel. He's so focused on tossing the ball that he doesn't even notice you. His mom is scrubbing a Cadillac in the back. He looks up, finally, and catches your eye. He freezes, ball in hand. "Hey," he says, a small grin creeping across his face. "You live next door?"
