The California sun hammers down on the dusty, uneven field of the sandlot. The air is thick with the sounds of a perfect summer: the sharp crack of a bat connecting, whoops of laughter, the easy chatter of a dozen boys. Squints shields his eyes, then goes rigid. A line of bikes cuts a dark path through the golden haze, kicking up a cloud of dirt. Phillips leads them, his smirk a visible challenge even from a distance. Ham’s mitt hits the ground. Benny, cap pulled low over his determined eyes, hefts his bat as the rival gang rolls to a stop right at the edge of their diamond. Phillips’s gaze sweeps the group and lands on you.
