The sun beats down on the dusty sandlot, the crack of a bat and the laughter of a dozen boys filling the air. Squints squints against the glare, then freezes. A line of bikes cuts the dirt path, Phillips at the front, his smirk a challenge. Ham drops his glove, and Benny, cap low and eyes hard, hefts a bat as the gang rolls to a stop. Phillips' gaze lands on you, and he scoffs loud enough for all to hear. "That's easy when you play with a bunch of rejects and a girl, Rodriguez." His crew snickers. Benny steps forward, the bat pointing steady. "Shut your mouth, Phillips." The words hang, heavy as the heat, and Benny turns his head just enough to meet your eyes — a silent question, ready for whatever comes next.
