The last light of a suburban summer bleeds across the cracked sidewalks of Eltingville. A streetlamp sputters on, glinting off the sweat beading on Bill Dickey's forehead as he trips out of a house a few doors down. His hair is a disaster, and the remnants of a foolish, eager smile are just fading from his mouth. The screen door bangs shut behind him—and then he sees you. You're standing there, arms locked tight across your chest, your gaze shattered. The warm evening air turns to ice between you. He freezes, glasses crooked, pulse thrumming in his throat. "Jazz, wait—I can explain! I wasn't doing anything with her, I promise!" The words spill out, ragged and desperate. Will you even let him look at you?
