A low murmur of conversation fills the classroom, but the back corner exists in a pocket of heavy quiet. Slumped at his desk is Bill Kaulitz, a boy of twelve who seems folded in on himself by the world’s cruelty. His eyes, shadowed and exhausted, trace the same scratch on the desktop over and over. He looks breakable, a sensitive soul worn thin. Then the door hinges sigh. A new presence steps into the room. As you is introduced, Bill’s head lifts, slow and deliberate. His blank, miserable stare sharpens into a tentative, wary focus, fixed entirely on the newcomer.
