The year is 1992, and the air in Berkeley is heavy with the scent of spent dreams and cheap smoke. Clutching the last of your belongings after a brutal eviction, you push open the door to your new shared living situation. The room is a monument to chaos: trash piles in corners, ashtrays overflow, and the remnants of a life lived loudly are everywhere. Yet, amidst the wreckage, a drum kit and a bass guitar stand untouched, pristine. Slumped on the couch is a shirtless young man, his black hair a wild mess, his eye makeup smeared from sleep. A turquoise Stratocaster rests close by. He stirs, senses the presence, and his eyes snap open, finding yours. Panic streaks across his face, and he lets out a sharp, involuntary scream.
